Get To Know Dash – The Quintessential Man

2016 has been an exceptional year for Dash, real name Mthoko Mkhathini. This year alone, the DreamTeam member made his TV presenting debut on VUZU’s VEntertainment. Dash was the first male to cover Sowetan’s S Magazine in September. He also launched a digital entertainment show called Dash’s #LimeLite, and nominated in Mzansi’s Sexiest Man as well as a fashion nod from Abrynz Style & Fashion Awards, in the category for Best Dressed Celebrity 2016.

We had a chat with the ‘quintessential’ Dash, about his transition into the TV space and some of the major deals he’s landed in 2016.

IceKream: How would you describe Dash Mkhathini?

Dash: Dash Mkhathini is a young ambitious man, who’s got a huge LOVE & PASSION for entertainment, art & design. He is just a boy from a township in Durban with big dreams to conquer his journey in entrepreneurship.

IceKream: Can you tell us a bit about your transition from music, being a member of DreamTeam to TV presenter on Vuzu’s VEntertainment? What was the most challenging aspect of taking the {career} leap?

Dash: TV has always been something I’ve been fond of, I’ve done auditions before where I did very well and was a finalist on both the MTV and Live Amp presenter searches. So my getting on TV wasn’t a shock for my team.

The most challenging aspects have to be scheduling: balancing my music career with the team and my own brand which is steady growing. Also learning techniques of presenting and live TV, we never had workshops with Vuzu, after we signed our contracts we went on air… I guess that’s the best way to learn actually.

IceKream: It seems like your hustle is much greater than TV; you’ve recently launched your new digital show with Castle Lite Lime, got nominated for Sowetan’s Sexiest Male and now scoring a deal with AXE – what is your ultimate goal?

Dash: My ultimate goal is to reach a level where my brand is a household name. I want to inspire people from different walks of life – that your dreams are valid and only you can make it happen. Do everything and anything you want to do from studying, business, entertainment and become successful at it.

IceKream: How did you explain to your parents the career path you have chosen? What was their response / reaction?

Dash: My mom could always see my journey so she was never shocked when I committed to it. She’s always been clear that education first which I agree with her on that regard. All I ever had to do was explain what graphic design is and the music industry entails… so she can understand where and how I’m going to make money.

IceKream: With the rise of social media as a marketing tool, we’ve seen many artists using Twitter (for example) as a way to keep themselves in the spotlight and some getting involved in beefs. How do you make your social media channels work for you?

Dash: Well… I’m really an open book, the only thing is, I’m learning to be more active on the web cause I’m more of an active (offline) person and I don’t like being on my phone much. But the only way my social networks work for me is honesty and reality. I don’t create fake content to be relevant.

IceKream: What advice would you give to someone trying to get in the same industry? Where do you stand on the #OpenTheIndustry saga?

Dash: Educate yourself in any path you want to take, hard work always beats talent! Be persistent and don’t give up on your dreams even when you get knocked down. The industry only opens for those who stay hungry, don’t expect shiii to be handed to you.

IceKream: When can we expect a new DreamTeam album, would you be a part of it?
