Hairstyles and Runway Rules Were Broken at the Soweto Fashion week

The atmosphere was electric, empowering and off-the-cuff at this year’s Soweto Fashion Week (SFW), held last week at Walter Sisulu Square, Soweto. The hottest runway show on Mzansi’s style calendar was a resounding success. The audience was left in awe when SFW’s long-standing partner for the sixth year running, and principal sponsor, Darling, showcased their jaw-dropping Black Panther-inspired hairstyles for SFW Autumn/Winter 2019 and celebrated “Black is flawesome”.

American businesswoman, and former supermodel, Tyra Banks, coined the term – “flawsome”, to help young women build self-confidence. Darling’s Senior Brand Manager Pearle Peane, said “We are surrounded by many shapes, sizes and shades in our black communities. Whether you are light-skinned or dark-skinned, all women are uniquely beautiful with their flaws, and we should embrace our flaws because they form part of our identity, which is why when selecting models for the Wakanda inspired range, “Unique” was our drawcard and our search led us to these beautiful models.”

In a bold move, up-and-coming models of all shapes, sizes and colours walked the runway and showed off their awesome, flawsomeness. Peane said, “African beauty is captured through traditions that demonstrate how women should embrace their bodies with their flaws, and proudly adorn themselves with ornaments and precious treasures.”
