South Africa’s movers and shakers will descend to the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa for the Annual Darling Exceptional Woman Awards ceremony on Thursday, 20 September 2018. The awards celebrate women who are doing exceptionally well in their careers and setting positive examples amongst the youth of our country. Portia Masiyiwa from Darling says, “Darling believes in empowering women, which is the reason we have decided to honour women who are doing incredibly well in their respective spheres and encourage other young South African females to pursue their dreams regardless of where they come from”.
The event, which is organised by, and for, smart, savvy women looking to re-define their looks for success will honour the following stars:
1. Thembi Mtshali-Jones: Lifetime Achievement Award
Thembi is a South African singer, actress, and playwright with over 40 years of experience in the entertainment industry. She is best known for her starring role, Thoko, on the popular sitcom ‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi. As a singer, Thembi has performed with world-renowned artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Abdullah Ibrahim as well as the late Miriam Makeba and Bra Hugh Masekela. She has recorded four albums and was lead vocalist on albums with Sipho Gumede and the African Jazz Pioneers.
2. The Newcomer Award – Kwezi Ndlovu
Kwezi is an actress on the hit telenovela Isithembiso, she was born and bred in Durban and a rising star who holds a university degree in Criminology, proving she has both beauty and brains.
3. The Bomb Braid Award – Zimkhitha Nyoka
Zimkhitha is a South African actress known for her role in Akin Omotoso’s, Vaya. She previously acted in Mutual Friends by Norman Maake, the TV dramaNkululeko and currently on Isithembiso.
4. The Social Media Influencer Award – Farieda Matsileng
Farieda is MTV Base presenter, actress, voice-over artist and production manager, best known for her starring role as Kandy, a good-hearted girl who is everyone’s best friend, in the telenovela Isithembiso. She has around 168.5k Instagram followers, showing her strong presence on social media.
5. Musician of the Year Award – Sho Madjozi
Maya Wegerif, known by her stage name, Sho Madjozi, is a rapper and poet. She is known for rapping in her native tongue Tsonga, she recently released two new singles titled “Huku and “Dumi Hi Phone” which are taking South Africa by storm. The rapper who recently performed at The Afropunk Festival in New York will also entertain guests with a vibey and upbeat performance.
