Following Kim Kardashian’s controversial naming of her new Kimono shapewear line, a Japanese mayor has responded by issuing an open letter to the reality star, urging her to “reconsider” the seemingly culturally insensitive name.
Directing the note to “Ms. Kim Kardashian West” of Kimono Intimates, Inc, Kyoto mayor Daisaku Kadokawa called the kimono “a fruit of craftsmanship [that] truly symbolizes [a] sense of beauty, [the] spirits and values of Japanese.”
He also emphasized that the kimono has been worn by tourists and locals in Kyoto, and is loved by people worldwide. The attire “should not be monopolized,” he added.
