This Youth Month, the 5FM breakfast team are spending the month shining a light on youngsters who are passionate about radio. The team have invited the youth to host their own mini shows within the 5 Breakfast timeslot every Friday of the month. Dubbed, the Take 5 Breakfast, the on-air project sees the station engaging with high schoolers around the country, celebrating them – as they hand over the microphone – giving them a voice.
The 5 Breakfast team have already had two successful shows, with highlights including surprise interviews with Miss Universe Zozi Tunzi and Locnville. High school students are encouraged to send short voice notes or a WhatsApp message to 5FM identifying themselves with a link as if they were radio presenters, introducing their own shows and the content listeners can look forward to.
Each week the team then selects five people who impress them and give all five of them the opportunity to present their show for 30 minutes each. Each student will design all the content and choose the music, with the assistance of 5 Breakfast host Dan Corder and the team.
“It is so inspiring to see the talent and bravery of high schoolers from all across South Africa as they step up to the mic to host this country’s iconic youth radio breakfast show. Giving young people the platform to express themselves and their truth is exactly what Youth Month is about,” says Dan.
In addition to the Take 5 Breakfast campaign, listeners can also look forward to youth related content across most of the shows. On 5 Mid Mornings with Stephanie Be (09:00 – 12:00) on every Friday, Stephanie will feature up-and-coming local artists and entertainers making waves in the industry. Each person will have the opportunity to chat about how they got their start and share plans for their future. From Valley Sixteen (who is Apple Music’s Up Next artist and former teenage Idols contestant) to 14-year-old Gabrielle De Gama who made her acting debut by landing the lead role in Annie, listeners can look forward to some great stories and insights.
Tune in every Friday just after 11:00 to meet some of these incredible young South Africans.
