Movie Review: Sterring – A Hilarious Joyride of Local Talent and Feel-Good Vibes. Now Streaming on Showmax.

This past weekend, we settled in for what we thought would be just another casual watch on Showmax and ended up laughing, grinning, and totally charmed by Sterring, a proudly South African comedy that knows exactly what it is: fun, light-hearted, and unapologetically local. Directed by Africa Movie Academy Awards nominee Kgosana Monchusi , Sterring is a comedic tale that centres around the misadventures of an ordinary guy who finds himself in not-so-ordinary situations. Without giving away too much (because no one likes spoilers), expect laugh-out-loud moments, a few unexpected twists, and that warm feeling you only get from something made at home, for us.

What truly stood out to me was the incredible showcase of local talent. There’s a fantastic blend of seasoned faces we know and love, alongside a wave of fresh, exciting newcomers who absolutely steal the show. It’s always refreshing to see a platform like Showmax giving new stars a moment to shine and Sterring does that effortlessly.

The humour is authentically South African, Pretoria to be exact and is very relatable, sometimes ridiculous (in the best way), and steeped in the kind of cultural references that make you go, “Yoh! That’s so true!” Whether it’s the dialogue which is mostly in S’Petori, the mannerisms, or the familiar dynamics between characters, there’s a genuine charm that makes the film feel like a warm plate of pap and mogodu, comforting, satisfying, and just right.

Sterring feels like a breath of fresh air, something you can watch with your siblings, parents, or even your gogo, and everyone will find something to giggle at. If you’re looking for a film that’ll lift your mood, celebrate South African humour, and give you something to chat about at Monday lunch, Sterring is it. It’s not trying to be deep or overly complex—and that’s the beauty of it. It delivers exactly what it promises: a good time.

Final Verdict:
Sterring is a fun, family-friendly comedy that shines a light on South Africa’s comedic gold and rising stars. It’s definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something light, local, and lekker.
