Spotify today announced the premiere of Zama, a powerful three-minute cinematic short film starring acclaimed singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla. Released alongside his album Ndingubani, the film forms part of Spotify’s ongoing commitment to championing African artists through bold, culturally resonant storytelling.
Built around Zama, the anchor track from the album unfolds as a single continuous walking shot through Melville, Johannesburg – a neighbourhood deeply woven into Mabandla’s personal history. Beginning in the indigenous grasslands of Melville Koppies, the journey traces the streets that shaped his formative years in the city before culminating at a summit overlooking the Johannesburg skyline. Narrated by Mabandla in both isiXhosa over the instrumental arrangement of Zama, the film explores themes of identity, belonging and self-discovery. Structured in three acts, it mirrors the central question posed by the album’s title: Ndingubani.
With no elaborate sets, scripted characters or visual distractions, the film places the artist, the city and the story at its centre. “Zama is a meditation on becoming,” says Bongeziwe Mabandla. “It’s about looking back, looking inward and understanding how the places we move through continue to shape who we are.”
The multi-award-winning artist, Mabandla, built an international reputation through four critically acclaimed albums – Umlilo, Mangaliso, iimini and amaXesha. His accolades include three South African Music Awards for Best Alternative Music Album, a Feather Award for Musician of the Year and a Metro FM Award for Best African Pop.
His most recent album, amaXesha, was named Global Album of the Month by The Guardian, which described the project as “a deeply moving body of work that transcends language and borders.” His celebrated COLORS performance in 2023 further introduced his singular artistry to audiences around the world. Known for creating music that bridges intimacy and universality, Mabandla has captivated audiences across London, Paris, Berlin, New York, Mexico City and beyond through sold-out performances that blur the boundaries between folk, soul, African storytelling and contemporary alternative music.
His recent release arrives at a pivotal moment in Mabandla’s career – fresh off a 28-date tour across Europe and Africa, which concluded on Friday, 5 June, the artist continues a remarkable trajectory that has established him as one of the strongest voices in contemporary African music.
The premiere of Zama underscores Spotify’s continued investment in African creative excellence, providing artists with new ways to deepen audience connection through innovative visual storytelling.
