South African music powerhouse Mi Casa proudly represented the country on the global stage this past weekend, captivating thousands with a memorable performance at the annual Nelson Mandela Day celebrations in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square.
Hosted by Scatterlings in partnership with the South African Government, the 18 July celebration transformed one of London’s most recognisable public spaces into a vibrant showcase of South African music, culture and heritage. The event honours the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, whose unwavering commitment to equality, reconciliation and human dignity continues to inspire generations across the world. Bringing South African artists to one of the world’s most famous landmarks served as a powerful reminder of Mandela’s enduring global legacy and the role that music continues to play in connecting people across cultures and continents.
Mi Casa took to the Trafalgar Square stage alongside an exceptional line-up of South African artists, including Zakes Bantwini, Jesse Clegg, Beatenberg, Msaki, Sjava, Thakzin, Sun El Musician, and several other celebrated artists, delivering a performance that had thousands of Londoners singing and dancing in celebration of South African music.
Speaking to SABC News leading up to the performance, J’Something reflected on the significance of the occasion:
“I think it’s a day that requires our awareness, our reflection, and our gratitude – for a human being in Tata Nelson Mandela that left not only a massive impact, but that signifies so much more. My message would be: may we spend this day not only celebrating Nelson Mandela, but reflecting and using this powerful thing that is called gratitude to spread joy, love, and positivity – not only amongst one another (South Africans), but with others as well that have been touched by the story of one incredible human being.”
For Mi Casa, performing in Trafalgar Square was about far more than a live show – it was an opportunity to celebrate South African identity, share the country’s rich musical heritage with an international audience, and honour one of the nation’s greatest leaders through the universal language of music.
The performance also marks another milestone in Mi Casa’s ongoing 15 Year celebrations, a campaign reflecting on the trio’s remarkable journey while looking ahead to an exciting new chapter. Later this year, in September, the band will embark on their 2026 European Tour, returning to London, Dublin, Amsterdam and Lisbon as they continue sharing South African music with audiences across the continent. As Mi Casa enters its fifteenth year, the band remains committed to representing South Africa on the world stage while preparing to release new music and their highly anticipated seventh studio album in 2027.
Performing at Trafalgar Square wasn’t just another international appearance – it was a celebration of Ubuntu, a tribute to Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy, and a reminder that South African music continues to inspire, unite and resonate far beyond its borders.
