The South African State Theatre, under the leadership of its visionary Artistic Director, Sekhabi
Aubrey, together with his dedicated team, proudly presents the highly anticipated production, Music
in the Air – The Musical, running from 12 – 28 September 2025. This proudly South African work pays homage to the music icons of the 1980s and 1990s, whose timeless songs offered hope and unity during some of the country’s most turbulent years.
Through the unforgettable music of Brenda Fassie, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chicco, Lucky Dube, Letta Mbuli, Johnny Clegg, Mafikizolo, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahlathini & Mahotella Queens, and many
others, the musical tells the story of South Africa’s journey from apartheid repression to democratic
freedom. The production, which is written and directed by Joel Zuma, features a powerful ensemble of both established and emerging talent, fusing acting, music, and dance into one dynamic experience. The
stellar line-up includes Joel Zuma, Hlengiwe Lushaba-Madlala, Ntambo Rapatla, Thabile Mtshali, Sip Nkabinde, Sbusiso Shozi, Mbali Ngidi, and Zodumo Shange.
Many of these performers are already household names, having graced South Africa’s most beloved
television productions such as Uzalo, Diepcity, The Estate, and Sbongile & The Dlaminis. Their
combined artistry promises to deliver authenticity, passion, and electrifying stage energy. Music in the Air is more than a theatrical production—it is a living memory of South Africa’s resilience and cultural pride. Through high-energy performances, poignant storytelling, and unforgettable melodies, audiences will journey through the soundtrack of the nation’s democracy.
After a triumphant launch at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban in 2021, where it received
rave reviews and overwhelming audience demand, the production now comes to Pretoria for a full
season, ahead of a nationwide tour to Johannesburg, Durban, and Pietermaritzburg in 2026. “This production celebrates the power of music to inspire, unite, and heal. These songs carried us
through the most difficult times and remain part of who we are as South Africans.”, says Joel Zuma
